We are very honoured to house the fin base, fin adapters and fin box templates from RDM (CAD designer) for you to download for free! 


What is 3D Printing?

3D printing or additive manufacturing is a process of making three dimensional solid objects from a digital file. The creation of a 3D printed object is achieved using additive processes. In an additive process an object is created by laying down successive layers of material until the entire object is created. Each of these layers can be seen as a thinly sliced horizontal cross-section of the eventual object.


How does it work?

It all starts with making a virtual design of the object you want to create. This virtual design is made in a CAD (Computer Aided Design) file using a 3D modelling program (for the creation of a totally new object) and makes a 3D digital copy of an object. To prepare the digital file created in a 3D modelling program for printing, the software slices the final model into hundreds or thousands of horizontal layers. When this prepared file is uploaded in the 3D printer, the printer creates the object layer by layer. The 3D printer reads every slice (or 2D image) and proceeds to create the object blending each layer together with no sign of the layering visible, resulting in one three dimensional object.

 

What applications in surfing?

There are few companies already making wax combs, fin keys and even fins… With the growing use of 3D printing and improvements in the speed, cost, quality and material choice we thought it might be a good idea to get some open source files together that people could use.  Just click on the template page you want and then click on the download link and follow the prompts, find a 3D printing place and start printing!

 

Is it free?

Yes it is! RDM is doing this to help out everyone! No patents and no licences.

Futures Adapter 

This RDM design allows for Futures style fins to fit into an 8 inch or 10 inch finbox as an adapter, one grubscrew will hold it in place and can be easily removed out of the adapter after use. 
Ask your 3D printer for the strongest structural plastic they have available, show or explain what the design is for.  They should be able to advise you of something suitable.

Also it would be best if you thread the screw holes using the proper tap as well  this will stress the plastic less than threading it with the screw itself.

Dual Tab Adapter

This RDM design allows for FCS or dual tab style fins to fit into an 8 inch or 10 inch finbox as an adapter.  2 grubscrews hold the fin in its place can be easily removed out of the adapter after use.

FCS Fin Base 

RDM (CAD Designer) designed this FCS fin base for people who want to make a dual tab fin but find the base really difficult to build. 

It fits into all Dual tab fin systems, FCS, FCS2, Surfinz, Gearbox and even fin solutions and allows permanent addition of a fin blank onto the support structure of the fin base.

Multi Base Fin

This RDM design allows removable fitting of fins built with a suitable matching base tab using a grub screw. 

Maybe you have an old glass in fin that has never glassed on? The idea of this style of box would be to insert a fin and tighten, fin not right for the conditions? Unscrew and insert another fin. Ask your 3D printer for the strongest structural plastic they have available, show or explain what the design is for.  They should be able to advise you of something suitable.

Single Fin Base

RDM (CAD Designer) designed this one for fin base for people who want to make a single fin but find the base tedious and difficult to build.

It fits into a normal 8 inch or 10 inch finbox and allows permanent addition of a fin blank onto the support structure of the fin base.

Base Insert

This RDM design allows permanent addition of a support panel that a fin can be built onto for those who prefer to insert a sheet of ply or fibreglass (3 sizes 3.2mm, 4mm, 6mm) into the 3D print base.

Base Insert Reverse

Not all fin bases are the same, this RDM template allows permanent addition of a fin with a base tab of suitable design 3 sizes 3.2mm, 4mm, 6mm designed  into the 3D print base.
